2009 Stackhouse Award and Scholarship Winners
Assist Nurses and Entrepreneurs
(New York, NY May 4, 2009)This year’s Jan Stackhouse Scholarship winner, Lendynette Pacheco, helps entrepreneurs launch businesses at Baruch College’s Lawrence N. Field Center for Entrepreneurship.
“I have worked with Lendynette and she is a great example of a Baruch alumnae giving back to the community. We’re proud to have a winner come from contributing to our own college,” says Professor Edward Rogoff , Chairman of the Management Department.
This year’ Stackhouse Award winner, Roberta Murphy, was also a 2007 Stackhouse Scholarship winner who helps nurses understand and defend their rights in hospitals. The award committee members, which included, for the first time, Jan Stackhouse’ sister, Lynne, were immediately drawn to the essays of this year’s winners,” said Professor Richard Kopelman, Director of the Masters of Science in Industrial and Labor Relations (MSILR) program. “ We’re also pleased that Roberta applied for the award this year and she is proof that you can win more than once!”
During these trying economic times, the College’s first and only scholarship named exclusively after a woman, offers $1500 towards tuition . The Jan Stackhouse Award includes participation in the Baruch student Award ceremonies, “A Celebration of Student Achievement,” in addition to a $500 check. The Stackhouse scholarships and awards have been given to deserving students in the MSILR program since 2006, the year after the tragic death of Ms. Stackhouse in the Berkshires. Ms. Stackhouse was a senior member of SEIU 1199, which helped fund the annual scholarships and awards along with the support of Ms. Stackhouse’s family and friends.
