Baruch College's Zicklin School of Business to Offer Joint Ph.D. Degree
The Board of Trustees for the City University of New Yorkapproved the establishment of a joint Business Ph.D. degree program that will now include theBaruch College name, alongside CUNY’s Graduate Center. The approval was given during the Board meeting held on June 24, 2013.
Baruch College will begin awarding the joint Ph.D. degree in Business in Academic Year 2013-14.
Dr. Mitchel B. Wallerstein, President of Baruch College, says that the CUNY Board’s approval acknowledges the College’s unique role in teaching, mentoring and supervising business doctoral students since 1970.
”Working in close coordination with the leadership of the CUNY Graduate Center, the existing Business Ph.D. program has been modified to make it a jointly conferred degree between the two academic units,” President Wallerstein said. “Given that Baruch’s Zicklin School of Business is the only AACSB accredited business school at CUNY and has unequaled faculty and staff resources, this new arrangement better reflects the reality of how doctoral students are trained and mentored at the University.”
The Ph.D. Program in Business is one of 34 doctoral programs currently offered by the Graduate Center. Students in the Program specialize in one of five business areas: accounting, finance, information systems, marketing or management. The Ph.D. Program in Business continues the strategic growth of the Zicklin School’s academic offerings, which have been ranked nationally by U.S. News & World Report, Forbes, and Newsweek, among others.
- Accreditation and Peer Recognition: There are approximately 500 U.S. business schools accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB); fewer than 70 are able to award a doctoral degree in multiple business disciplines. The Zicklin School of Business now joins this prestigious group. These institutions make up more than 95% of the Business Week Top 50 and almost all have been ranked by U.S. News and World Report, Forbes, The Financial Times, Bloomberg-Business Week and other college guides and rating agencies.
- Faculty Development: The Ph.D. designation for Baruch College affirms the academic excellence of the Zicklin School of Business and re-enforces its commitment to quality research in the business field. National and international corporations and governments routinely seek out faculty experts from doctoral granting schools where research is valued and doctoral students are available to help further research interests. As Baruch College joins other Ph.D. granting institutions that offer rigorous business programs, it will continue its recruitment and development of talented faculty.
- Opportunities for Students and Graduates: The Business Ph.D. degree program will continue to reside on the Baruch College campus and receive enhanced financial support from the College. Doctoral students serve as research assistants and joint authors on major research projects with Baruch faculty and gain their teaching experience in the College’s highly regarded undergraduate programs. Graduates of the doctoral program have been placed in faculty positions at Columbia, New York University and almost every other university in the Northeast; the College has expanded its graduate placements into the Big Ten, Pac 12 and other major university conferences. Graduates with the Ph.D. in Business have also joined university faculties in Europe, Asia and the Middle East.
