Process and Requirements

The Application Process

Admission to Zicklin's MBA and MS programs is offered to applicants whose academic credentials, work experience, and management potential is competitive with current standards. Admission requirements for MBA and MS programs are the same. All applicants must have a regionally accredited bachelor's degree or its recognized international equivalent (any major), and provide their scores on the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT). Those whose native language is not English and who have not completed a U.S. undergraduate or graduate degree must submit scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language and the Test of Written English (TOEFL/TWE).  Zicklin will accept any version of the TOEFL (paper based, computer based, internet based), provided it is taken within 2 years of the beginning of the term for which the application is submitted.

The Self-Managed Application Procedure

Zicklin requires the self- or applicant-managed system for submitting applications. Applicants complete transcript and recommendation request forms and send them with return envelopes addressed to themselves to the schools they attended and the individuals who will be submitting recommendation letters on their behalf. These are returned in sealed envelopes to the applicant and are then submitted unopened with their application forms, resume and essay(s).

Test scores (GMAT, TOEFL, GRE [where acceptable]) must be sent directly to Baruch College / Zicklin School of Business by the appropriate agency.

Applicants who select the on-line application option also follow this procedure. Personal data forms, essay(s) and resume and recommendations can be submitted electronically, but the transcript request forms should be printed out for use as described above.

The Zicklin application has all the required forms and instructions for applicants. Go to Applying to Zicklin: The Application.

Application Requirements

For Zicklin MBA and MS Alumni Applying for a Second Degree

A Special Abbreviated Application Procedure

If you have a Zicklin MBA or MS and wish to apply for a second degree, the simplified process is outlined below. (Second MS degrees are permitted; second MBAs are not.) Deadlines for all Zicklin Graduate Alumni are May 31 for Fall admission and Nov. 30 for Spring admission.

Transcripts, new GMAT*, GRE* and TOEFL* scores and letters of recommendation are not required.  (A transcript of your Zicklin graduate coursework will be obtained by the Graduate Admissions staff.)

*NOTE:  If you did not take GMAT (or TOEFL - if required) for admission to your previous Zicklin program you will have to take these tests for your new admission.  If your new program accepts the GRE (MS in QMM or MS in Statistics) you will need to provide test scores from either the GMAT or the GRE.

We require:
  1. Completed Personal Information Forms from the standard application packet (pp. A1-A4).
  2. A current one-page resume.
  3. An essay briefly telling why you want a second master's degree.
  4. An application fee

For international students on F-1 visas: A visa is degree program specific and a new one will have to be issued for the new master's program. You must complete a Request for Certificate of Eligibility (Form I-20 or IAP-66) and Declaration and Certification of Finances forms from the standard application booklet (pp. D1-D3) and submit them with the required documentation of sufficient finances for the second program.

Special application packets are available from Zicklin Graduate Admissions.

If you are interested in taking a few more courses rather than entering another degree program, contact the Office of Graduate Academic Services, 646-312-3140, or e-mail zicklin_graduate_advisement@baruch.cuny.edu..

For All Other Applicants

The following items are required:

  1. Completed Personal Information Forms from the standard application packet (pp. A1-A4).
  2. Official Transcripts / Mark Sheets of all postsecondary academic work at colleges and universities. Use the Transcript Request Form from the standard application packet (p. B1). (To be considered official, transcripts must have been sent directly from the school attended to the applicant who puts them together - unopened - with the other application forms to be sent to Zicklin Graduate Admissions.)
  3. Two Letters of Recommendation (usually one from an employer and one from a professor). As with transcripts, to be considered official, recommendations must be sent directly from the recommender to the applicant who puts them together - unopened - with the other application forms. Use the Recommendation Form from the standard application packet (pp C1-C2). If the recommender wishes to add additional comments they must be sent on official letterhead.
  4. A current one-page resume. IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT WORK EXPERIENCE.
  5. A one-page essay discussing your career plans and goals, the influence of your work experience on them, and the reasons it is important for you to undertake this graduate program at this time.

A second, optional essay may be written to provide the admissions committee with any information the application has otherwise not required but that you feel the committee should have when it makes its decision.
  6. An application fee -- $125 if applying by mail; $135 if applying through our on-line application.
  7. Scores on the GMAT:   all MBA and MS applicants must submit scores from the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) taken within 5 years of the beginning of the term for which they are applying (see #8 below for information on the GRE as a substitute for the GMAT for two of our MS programs). For GMAT information and applications contact the Graduate Management Admission Council  at www.mba.com  or  www.gmac.com. When chosing the school to send your test scores, you will find Zicklin's programs listed under
    • New York
    • City University of New York - Baruch College
    • Zicklin School of Business
Sending your test scores to any of the programs listed under Zicklin School of Business will ensure that we have access to them.
  8. Zicklin will accept the Graduate Records Examinations (GRE) General Test as a substitute for the GMAT ONLY for the MS in Quantitative Methods and Modeling and the MS in Statistics. However we encourage all applicants who have taken neither test to take the GMAT.  For GRE information and applications contact Educational Testing Services (ETS) by phone (609-771-76700) , email (gre@ets.org) or at www.gre.org. Baruch's Zicklin School of Business ETS code to designate that test scores be sent to us is 2034.

Special International Student Requirements

The following additional items are required from most INTERNATIONAL applicants.

Please read each description carefully to determine if the requirement applies to you.

  1. TOEFL & TWE - any applicant whose first language is not English, or who does not have a US undergraduate or graduate degree is required to submit scores for both the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and the Test of Written English (TWE) taken within 2 years of the beginning of the term for which the application is submitted. For TOEFL / TWE information and applications contact Educational Testing Services (ETS) by phone (609-771-7100) , email (toefl@ets.org) or at www.toefl.org. IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT ENGLISH PROFICIENCY REQUIREMENTS
  2. Transcripts and Diplomas:

Original, official documents (transcripts, mark sheets, recommendations, etc.) in languages other than English must be accompanied by official English translations. A photocopy of the diploma or certificate is also required, but should not be translated.

Your undergraduate degree must include the equivalent of at least 4 years of postsecondary education and be recognized as equal to a regionally accredited U.S. Bachelors' degree. Several countries have 3-year degree programs which are considered equivalent, but normally that is not the case. If you are not sure, you may want to have your transcript evaluated.

Occasionally international students living in the U.S. have difficulty getting official transcripts sent to them because their school's policy restricts the issuing of transcripts, or there are other procedural problems. In these cases the Baruch/CUNY two receipt policy allows the submission of certain documents as proof of an applicant's attempt to procure these documents. Please note: this process can take 2 months or more, so begin early.
  3. Financial Documentation for F-1 and J-1 Visas:
In order for you to obtain an F-1 (student) visa or a J-1 (exchange student) visa you must submit Declaration and Certification of Finances and Affidavit of Support documents to the Office of Graduate Admissions with your other application materials. Submitting the required financial documentation after the offer of admission will delay the issuing of the I-20 / IAP-66. Follow instructions on pages D1 through D5 in the application package carefully.

Work Experience Note

Prospective applicants to all our MBA and MS programs are encouraged to work for at least 2 years before planning to enroll. We do occasionally offer admission to our FlexTime programs to recent graduates with strong academic credentials and an impressive list of extra-curricular activities and part-time work experience.

Applicants for the Full-Time (Honors) MBA program please note that we will no longer consider any applicants for that program without at least two years of postgraduate full-time work experience.

English Proficiency Note

Approximately half of Zicklin's full-time students are international students, with over 30 countries represented in the graduate student body. These students bring an impressive cosmopolitan diversity to the study of management at Zicklin. To ensure that our international students are prepared for graduate study, they are required to provide the Admissions Committee with evidence that their skills in the use of English are sufficient. Relevant indicators include:

Primary Indicators

  • TOEFL and TWE scores
  • GMAT verbal and analytical writing scores

Secondary Indicators

  • application essay and resume
  • comments made by those submitting reference letters

International students are encouraged to draw attention to any other aspects of their background and experience that would demonstrate their English fluency.
