Entrepreneur's Help Page offers advice and articles covering business (franchising, insurance, extending credit), finance (tips for finding venture capital and obtaining bank loans), and legal matters (taxation, intellectual property, bankruptcy). A checklist for starting a business is included.
EntreBiz.com Resources for entrepreneurs include auctions, business buyer and seller listings, and events. Registration is free.

Access to the databases is available on campus through the Library’s Information Resources at http://newman.baruch.cuny.edu/info_resources/default.htm as well as off campus to Baruch students and faculty. Click on Remote Access on the left side of the Information Resources page for information.
Following are some of the special features associated with company and industry information in a selection of databases.
Lexis/Nexis
Local, regional, national and international news, including the New York Times, and company reports and directories are available. Select the Business portion of the database, then a specific industry from the drop down menu for trade and industry publications. Research Patents in its Legal Research files, or search for information on current legal issues in its legal news files.
Business and Company Resource Center provides access to industry reports and rankings, including market share. It includes selected analysts reports offered by Investext; search the database InvestextPlus for a wider range of reports.
Factiva provides full text to hundreds of periodicals and press releases including the Wall Street Journal. .
ABI Inform/Global includes full-text articles from a number of global publications including the Wall Street Journal and numerous business publications. Enter the name of the industry and add (forecast or project? or predict?) to find articles featuring forecasts of specific industries. Business Source Premier, which contains the Harvard Business Review, is similarly useful.
S&P’s NetAdvantage contains a number of different data sources and comparisons on industries and companies including key business ratios and statistics, trends and investment reviews, and industry surveys.
The Commerce Bureau’s Stat/USA is useful for the latest government economic releases as well as international marketing and trade reports.
Info Share provides data on NYC population trends, immigration, and socio-economic indicators at neighborhood, zip code and other area boundaries. The database can be accessed at the library’s Information Resources page.
TableBase and its Business and Industry component, are also useful for industry analysis

While many general Web sites contain information on financing, the sites listed below deal primarily with that subject.
vFinance.com provides a free list of over 1,600 venture capitalists and a fee-based angel investor search.
Capital Connection explores aspects of finance including loans, venture capital, tutorials, business plan help and banking assistance.
PricewaterhouseCoopers’s Money Tree surveys measure cash for equity investments by venture capital firms and offers tools and techniques in setting up a business and sourcing capital. Surveys report on industry sector, geographical markets, stage of development and type of financing.
“The Credit Process: A Guide for Small Business Owners”, is available from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, and details what lenders expect to see in business plans.

Provides search engine to track and view text and images of US patents with information on European and Japenese patents.

Information on patents, licensing, digital rights, and other issues.
Search Patents in Lexis Nexis Academic Universe/Legal Research, available through Newman Library’s Information Resources.
Industry Information
Many industry sources classify industries by the older SIC code or the newer NAICS. The NAICS classify over 300 industries found in North America. Using a classification scheme can help to locate companies with comparable lines of business.

The County Business Patterns surveys from the Census Bureau provides localized data on industries, sales, employment and concentration ratios. Check here to find out, for example, how many convenience stores are located within a small geographic area.
The Economic Census from the Census Bureau provides over 650 detailed imdustry reports.

Several library databases including ABI/GLOBAL, Business Source Premier, S&P NetAdvantage (industry surveys), Business and Company Resource Center, and Factiva, provide detailed information on industries along with literature on trends and projections for specific products and industries. Investext Plus features analysts’ reports on companies and industries. TableBase and its B&I component are also useful.

One section is updated each week. Stock advice and economic conditions are featured in Part III, Selection and Opinion.

Demographics and Consumer Buying Habits and Attitudes
The U.S. Census Bureau’s Web site publishes a wide variety of data. Local and regional housing and population data from the 2000 Census is now available. Many of the sources appearing below base their data on census information. Be sure to look at the Economic Census and the Country Business Data.

Detailed demographic and marketing segmentations of media audiences across a wide range of products. Also includes readership surveys.

Sales and Marketing Management (periodical). The annual Survey of Buying Power and Media Markets, located at the Reference Desk, contains projections for county and metropolitan areas as well as surveys of newspapers and television markets. Included is SM&M’s Effective Buying Income and Buying Power Index along with other special features.

Business.gov Legal and Regulatory Information for America's Small Businesses
This site, from the SBA, acts as a gateway not only to basic information and state and local laws and regulations, but also to the more specialized areas of e-commerce and exporting.
New York City’s Business Resources provides advice and forms on starting and growing a small business and selling to city agencies. It contains a business-to-business directory as well as a variety of publications useful in conducting business in NYC.
NewYorkbiz.com, the official web site of the New York City Economic Development Corporation, has information about available incentives such as Digital NYC, which provides information on affordable, pre-wired office space for high-tech businesses, as well as links to government agencies, non-profit organizations, seminars and other resources to help New York businesses grow.
NYPL’s Science, Industry and Business Library (SIBL) has an extensive online guide to starting a new business in NYC.
Information on assistance in starting, relocating, expanding and retaining small businesses in New York State can be found at Empire State Development. See also the new NY Loves Small Business section.
In New Jersey, the NJ Commerce and Economic Growth Commission’s Business Resource Center provides a variety of links to New Jersey business.
The U.S. Small Business Administration provides information on starting and financing small businesses. Its online library reading rooms feature laws, regulations, forms, SOPs, workmen’s compensation, taxes, incorporation, SBDs, and business licenses localized to individual states. A link to “Outside Resources” leads to an additional 3,400 Web sites.
The U. S. Treasury Department includes information on federal policies and practices as well as a comprehensive section on finance as it relates to small business and taxes. Links are provided to pages on starting a new business, employee retirement funds, and tax forms.
The Federal Trade Commission provides a number of resources related to advertising and marketing regulations. Included are links to credit and financial issues and acts such as Truth in Lending, Electronic Transfers, Fair Credit, Environmental Advertising, and other issues dealing with false or deceptive online advertising claims.
Trade Associations
An industry’s associations often provide excellent sources of data. After locating an association, check the library’s catalog under the name of the association to see if Newman Library receives their publications or check the World Wide Web to see if they have a Web site for additional industry information.

Global Perspectives
The Globus portion of the U.S. Dept. of Commerce’s Stat/USA database, available through Newman Library’s Information Resources, provides a number of international market research reports, country commercial guides, trade statistics, and trade leads.
The Euromonitor database provides market information, data and trends on a number of countries. Reports include information about consumer markets, leisure lifestyles, economic indicators and industrial markets.
Country Commercial Guides (CCGs) are also accessible from the Department of Commerce. CCGs, prepared annually by US embassies with the assistance of government agencies, contain analyses of a country’s commercial environment. Included is information on economic trends and outlooks, marketing US Products and Services, regulations and investments.
The International Trade Administration (ITA) in the Department of Commerce provides information on industries and sectors; countries and regions and trade statistics.
