Sustainability 2.0: Envisioning Business and the Urban Environment (151 E. 25th Street (between Lexington and Third Aves., Room 750, from November 06, 2009 - 09:00AM to November 06, 2009 - 02:00PM)

What will the business environment be like as we approach the mid-21st Century? Why discuss this topic in the first place? Why discuss it now when companies struggle to survive the severe economic downturn? What about water, power, and the very buildings companies occupy? The answers to these questions are the subject of the next chapter in sustainable business. Planning must begin now if cities of 25, 50, or even 100 million can provide a hospitable environment -- water, power, information infrastructure, buildings -- for business. Partnerships and collaboration among business, government, communities, and technology experts hold the key to these challenges. Experts from these fields come together on November 6 at Baruch College to discuss how they are meeting the challenge by envisioning the future.

Greenwashing: The Realities of Promoting Green Business Practices in the Corporate World (Newman Conference Center, Room 7-50, from April 03, 2009 - 08:30AM to April 03, 2009 - 02:00PM)

This event addressed how corporations have responded to the public call for businesses to act in ways that are environmentally friendly. The main area of discussion was the practice of “greenwashing,” whereby companies claim that their business practices are less harmful to the environment than the competition’s or, at least, less harmful than they have been in the past. Since greenwashing is largely a marketing ploy, its critics -- among them journalists, activists, scientists and politicians -- have responded with their own public relations campaigns, pointing out the flaws and inconsistencies in the corporations’ self-portrayals. Further, government agencies such as the Federal Trade Commission, the Environmental Protection Agency and various state and local regulators have attempted to impose standards which would evaluate claims of corporate environmentalism.
