Presidential Leadership Program for Interns

New Presidential Leadership Program for Interns

Baruch College has launched a new internship program, one that will benefit both our students and Baruch College as a whole. Beginning this semester, the Bernard M. Baruch Presidential Leadership Program for Interns will provide a stipend of $5,000 each to 20 Baruch College students annually. The students selected for these internships will be assigned to rigorous and substantive projects that are designed to advance the goals of the College and improve our practices and procedures.

This will be a competitive program for high potential students, both graduates and undergraduates. These students will have the opportunity to deal with real-world issues in a meaningful way. A subcommittee of the Baruch College cabinet will select the projects to which student interns will be assigned.

Fostering the leaders and practitioners of tomorrow is a prime goal of Baruch College and we understand that education is not confined to the classroom. The students selected for this internship will be expected to devote 300 hours per academic year to their duties. Applicants will be interviewed to assess their qualifications, interests and suitability, so that we can make the best match possible between interns and work assignments.

The new Presidential Leadership Program for Interns is very much in the spirit of our namesake, Bernard Baruch, who was a proponent of service to others as well as a champion of the young.

The President’s office is enlisting the services of the Weissman Center for International Business to administer the internship placement program and match the best possible candidates to the needs of each Baruch College unit. In order to start the matching process, students and College units should follow the application processes of the Internship Placement Office of the Center.

Students who participate in the Presidential Leadership Program for Interns will also participate in a number of leadership round tables and forums led by Baruch’s President.

If you are a student who already participates in the Center’s Internship Placement Program, you are automatically “enrolled” as a possible candidate for the matching process.

How to request an intern:

If your unit is interested in taking part in the Presidential Leadership Program for Interns, please call 646-312-2070 and ask for the “Presidential Leadership Program for Interns Project Form.”, or email the online form available here:

Presidential Program Project Description Form

Then, fill out the form to provide the Program with the following information:

  • Include a description of the overall purpose of the project and how it will enhance our capability as a College;
  • Specify the unit in which the work will occur and who will supervise the intern;
  • Briefly describe of the type of tasks/projects the intern will do;
  • Specify how many hours you need an intern per week (part-time is typically between 10-20 hours per week).
  • Indicate the length of the internship (typically 3 months, but can be longer);
  • Note specific majors or academic level (undergraduate, graduate) required;
  • Any specific computer skills (Word, Excel, Access, etc.) preferred and/or language skill required;
  • Any other requirements (academic credit, GPA minimum, etc).

Once your project description form is received, your request is assigned to a specific internship coordinator who will work with you one-on-one to fulfill your unit’s internship needs. The coordinator will email or fax you the résumés of the best matches. Units are limited to one intern; however, units may host two interns as long as each intern is working on a different approved project. Alternatively, if none of the applicants meet your needs, the internship coordinator will continue to look for qualified students for as long as you wish. An alternative selection process may also be arranged with the internship coordinator. Stage One of the program involves submission of projects by College units. Applications for projects and internships will be approved on a rolling basis.

Once your unit is hosting a student intern, you will be required to submit “time sheets” to confirm the completion of project hours during the tenure of the internship period. In addition, a progress report will be completed by the unit and submitted to the President’s Office.
