Conditional Permit

The Conditional ("Blanket") Study Abroad Permit

Because many foreign universities do not announce their semester's courses in advance, it is sometimes impossible for students to know before they leave in which courses they will enroll. The Conditional (or "Blanket") Study Abroad Permit allows you to be registered for 12 credits prior to departure, without requiring you to have your courses approved in advance.

If you are planning to attend such an institution, you will need to be issued a Conditional ("Blanket") Study Abroad Permit prior to your departure. To apply for a Conditional Study Abroad Permit, please come to the Study Abroad Office to fill out a Conditional Permit Acknowledgement Form. You are bound by the provisions listed on this form even if you neglect to sign it. As a recipient of a Conditional ("Blanket") Study Abroad Permit, you are required to submit to the Study Abroad Office immediately after the beginning of the host university semester a syllabus, along with a proposed Baruch course equivalency, for each course in which you enroll and for which you wish to receive credit. You must enroll for at least 12 transferable credits per semester.

Please note that the course syllabus or description must be official. Cutting and pasting text from the internet, or typing information from a printed source into a text file or e-mail is NOT acceptable. If the course syllabi can be accessed on the host university's website, you need only send the link to the syllabus to the Study Abroad Office.

For help in determining Baruch course equivalencies, you should consult the Baruch College bulletin online at http://www.baruch.cuny.edu/bulletin/. Select the Baruch College course that most closely matches the course you are taking in terms of subject matter and difficulty (i.e., is it closer to a 1000-level or 3000-level course at Baruch?). These Baruch courses are called course equivalencies. If you have difficulty choosing an equivalency, please contact the Study Abroad Office (study.abroad@baruch.cuny.edu) for assistance.

Upon receipt of the syllabus and your requested course equivalency, the Study Abroad Office will submit a Course Equivalency Approval Request for each course to the appropriate department chair for approval.

If any requested course equivalencies are not approved, you will be notified as soon as we receive the information. It is wise, therefore, to enroll initially in more courses than you plan to take for credit, in case one of your course equivalency requests is denied. You should NOT assume that any given course you are taking abroad will automatically be approved for Baruch credit.

You will not receive credit for courses taken abroad unless they have been approved by the appropriate Baruch department and by the Baruch Registrar's Office. If you submit this documentation later than mid-way through the Baruch College semester, you may be forced to lodge an appeal for retroactive credit. It is in your best interest to submit all necessary documentation on your courses to the Study Abroad Office in a timely manner.
