The Study Abroad Permit Application
CUNY Colleges use the term "permit" to describe the authorization, or permission, the student's home institution gives her/him to study outside this home institution. If you wish to take a course at another institution, you do so "on permit," or in other words, you receive permission from Baruch College to take that course for Baruch credit. Students who wish to study at institutions outside the U.S. also do so "on permit." They must follow the specific procedure outlined below for obtaining a special Study Abroad Permit.
- Once the Study Abroad Office has received all your approved Course Equivalency
Approval Requests (CEARs), or you have completed a
Conditional ("Blanket") Permit Form, you become eligible to apply for a
Study Abroad Permit.
- If you plan to attend any semester program, or a January Intersession program sponsored by a CUNY college (with the exception of Baruch's Spanish Language and Civilization program in Salamanca), the Study Abroad Office will obtain from the Registrar's Office a bill reflecting the appropriate charges for the term you plan to study abroad. The charges you will be assessed depend on the type of study abroad program you have selected. You will be notified via e-mail by the Study Abroad Office when you should collect your bill from our office. You should pay any charges indicated, have the receipt validated by the Baruch College Bursar, and return this validated bill receipt to the Study Abroad Office.
- If you attend a January Intersession or Summer Session study abroad program not sponsored by a CUNY college, or the Baruch College's Spanish Language and Civilization program in Salamanca, you will not be required to pay for your credits at Baruch College. You pay tuition and other fees directly to the program sponsor. However, every student who studies abroad, regardless of the type of program, is required to obtain a Study Abroad Permit prior to departure.
- Once the Study Abroad Office has received your validated
bill, and you have satisfied any remaining application requirements, the
Study Abroad Office will prepare your Study Abroad Permit Application, and submit it, along with your approved CEARs and a Study Abroad Permit
Application, to the Registrar's Office on your behalf. If you have
fulfilled all requirements, the Registrar's Office will issue you a
Study Abroad Permit. This Permit allows you to maintain your enrollment
status at Baruch while studying abroad, and ensures that you will earn
Baruch credit for all approved courses completed abroad. We will keep
you informed via e-mail throughout the entire process.
- If you attend the Spanish Language and Civilization
program in Salamanca or a program sponsored by a non-CUNY study abroad
provider for the Winter Intersession or Summer Session, you will NOT
receive a bill for CUNY tuition. However, to be eligible for a Study Abroad
Permit, you must still settle all
outstanding balances on your account with
the College. If there is a Bursar's stop on your account, the
Registrar's Office will issue you a Study Abroad Permit. Please make
certain that
you currently owe the College no money before you submit your
Application to Study Abroad.
- Students who study on programs sponsored by a CUNY college (with the exception of Baruch's Spanish Language and Civilization program in Salamanca) are normally required to submit an e-permit prior to their departure. The Study Abroad Office will instruct you when to submit your e-permit. Please to not attempt to submit it before you are notified by the Study Abroad Office, as it will only be rejected.
- The Study Abroad Office will notify you when your Study Abroad Permit is ready. You may pick up your Study Abroad Permit from the Study Abroad Office during walk-in office hours and should be kept in your records.
