Studying Abroad at Baruch College

Letter From The Study Abroad Director

Global learning, or a phrase like it, has become one of the most pervasive watchwords in higher education today. And for good reason: in today's world of deeply intertwined global relationships, the ability to move easily within and between cultures is becoming not only an increasingly prized qualification for jobs in any number of fields, but has become an indispensable component of a college education in the twenty-first century. Cultural and ethnic diversity is, of course, nothing new to Baruch students: it is one of the distinguishing characteristics of our College, and one of which we are most proud. Yet, by studying abroad, Baruch students can build upon that local experience to enhance the kinds of intercultural skills sought by many employers today and to give them an important competitive advantage in the job market.

The Baruch College Study Abroad Office, part of the Weissman Center for International Business, assists students from all three Baruch Schools who wish to study abroad. We hope that you will begin now to think now about this valuable opportunity. Planning early and planning wisely will help you achieve the most academically and culturally from the time you spend abroad, whether for a short-term January intersession or the entire academic year. We at the Study Abroad Office are here to help you choose your study abroad destination wisely, to fit your study abroad experience most effectively into your overall college education, and to guide you through the unavoidable administrative aspects of applying to study abroad as smoothly and efficiently as possible. As you begin to think seriously about your study abroad options, you might wish to consult the excellent brochure Study Abroad Student Guide, which contains a comprehensive overview that will help you make an informed choice of study abroad destination and program.

The Weissman Center for International Business, of which the Study Abroad Office is a part, has become the place at Baruch where various strands of global education at Baruch intersect, and is the principal institutional vehicle for promoting the College's aims of international education.

In addition to the Study Abroad Office, the Weissman Center for International Business is home to the Global Student Certificate Program and the International Business Internship Program. It also sponsors numerous events such as the Mitsui Co. Lunchtime Forum Series with a global focus throughout the year.

If you choose to study abroad, you will be embarking on an adventure that might well change your life forever. We at the Study Abroad Office are here to help you attain your goals.

Sincerely,
Richard Mitten, Ph.D.
Study Abroad Director
