The Quest for the Sustainable Corporation

Can we make “sustainability” a corporate goal? Many think business should see it in terms of the 3 P’s -- People, Profit, Planet. Yet, sustainability is not without its critics. This half-day conference focussed on two intertwined issues: short and long-term corporate costs and benefits and how to help management think within the ‘sustainability’ paradigm. On hand were practitioners from the United Nations Global Compact, socially responsible investors, non-governmental organization representatives, and corporate managers. With their help, we can create a sustainable New York, inside and out. This program was cosponsored by Net Impact.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

In today’s business world, everyone seems to be talking about the ‘sustainable corporation’. Whether you associate it with the triple bottom line (economic, social, and environmental outcomes) or the 3-P model (People, Profit, Planet), many think that is what business should be about. Yet it is not without its critics, who point out that, yes, social and environmental outcomes are important, but they also cost money, which raises prices, and isn’t that what the government is for anyway?

This conference focussed on two intertwined issues in this debate. First, a group of panelists examined the cost issues from the perspective of short-term and long-term corporate costs and benefits. The second panel then examined the question of how we move current management (and train future managers) to thinking more in a ‘sustainability’ paradigm for the corporation.

Speakers and panelists were chosen for their breadth of knowledge and experience in their particular fields. This was a thought-provoking event with speakers from the United Nations Global Compact, socially responsible investors, NGO representatives, and practicing managers.
