Dear Friends and Colleagues,

As the new dean of the Zicklin School of Business, I am excited to share with you what I have experienced and learned in the last four months.

My days have been filled with interactions with students, faculty, alumni, corporate partners, and staff. From these interactions, I’ve discovered that:

  • Zicklin’s students are energetic, intelligent, and very committed to building a foundation of knowledge and a network of colleagues that will serve them well as they advance in their careers.
  • Our distinguished faculty is equally passionate about meeting the students' interests and providing learning experiences both inside and outside of the classroom. Our goal is to continue to develop programs that build skills consistent with the expectations of the global marketplace.
  • Our accomplished alumni - who have advanced in their careers - are eager to engage with current students as mentors and partners. In the next few months, I look forward to traveling to visit alumni in Florida and California and discussing additional opportunities for partnering with them.

This fall has been packed with memorable events. For me, a real highlight was welcoming former Secretary General of the United Nations Kofi Annan and several UN dignitaries to the College on Oct. 23. The former Secretary General spoke in Baruch’s Mason Hall to a group of 650 students and faculty members on the topic of “New World Disorder: Challenges for the UN in the 21st Century.” Not only was I at the lecture but had the pleasure - along with honor students, the Dean’s Advisory Council, and Baruch President Mitchel B. Wallerstein - to meet this very distinguished group at a reception preceding Secretary Annan’s speech. A video of the speech is available in this issue of the eZine.

These months have shown me that the Zicklin School is well positioned for the future. Our Zicklin School of Business Strategic Plan 2014–2019 offers a roadmap to drive the School’s legacy into the 21st century. Yes, we have some work ahead of us - and we look forward to both the opportunities and the challenges.

I have only mentioned a few of the highlights, and there are many more. I hope that the Dean’s eZine will serve as a quarterly showcase for the exemplary work of the students, alumni, faculty, and staff of the Zicklin School of Business.

Best regards,

Fenwick Huss
