CPA Exam

Frequently asked questions about the CPA Exam, Stan Ross Department of Accountancy

When will I need to graduate with 150 credits in order to take the CPA exam?

Anyone applying to take the CPA exam in New York State after August 1, 2009 will be required to have taken a total of 150 semester hours in an approved academic program.

I am currently an undergraduate. What incremental programs can I now take at Baruch to give me 150 hours qualifying credits?

Our 150 hour programs are interdisciplinary and designed to improve your career opportunities when you seek your first job. The program reduces the professional experience requirement for the CPA to one year. Currently we offer three registered programs: A bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) in accountancy and a MS in taxation; A BBA in a business discipline other than accountancy and an MS in accountancy; and a Bachelor of Arts (BA) from the Weissman School and an MS in accountancy.

What are the advantages of a 150-hour degree over the existing 124-credit (undergraduate) degree?

Right now, the undergraduate degree with 124 credits allows you to take the CPA exam in New York State. However, there are two advantages in graduating from the 150-hour program: (1) it will prepare you better for taking the CPA exam; (2) virtually every other state in the U.S.A currently requires students to have completed 150 hours to sit for the CPA exam.

When can I take the CPA exam?

The CPA exam is given in the first two months in each quarter. Call 1-800-CPA-exam, or go to www.nasba.org. The exam is very challenging. We recommend that you prepare yourself thoroughly for the exam.

Does the Accountancy Department provide CPA review classes?

No. However, Becker CPA Review runs review classes on campus. For more information, call 1-877-CPA-EXAM or go to www.beckerCPA.com

Please note: Becker CPA Review is a for-profit entity with no business connection with Baruch College nor the Zicklin School of Business.

I am not registered at Baruch as a student; can I take classes at Baruch to qualify to take the CPA exam?

No, consult New York State Society of CPA’s and other schools within CUNY that offer accounting courses: Hunter, Queens, or Brooklyn College.
