for Internships in the Management Department

Undergraduate Internship MGT 3001/2/3 and MGT 5110

General Information

There are two types of internship available in the Management Department: MGT 3001/2/3 and MGT 5110.

MGT 3001 (One credit over one academic term – MGT 3001- that could be extended into two more credits over two more terms – MGT 3002 and MGT 3003) is oriented towards gaining some initial organizational experience. It is directed at those students who have no organizational experience and would like to test the waters.

  • Beginning in spring 2007 all 1-credit unpaid internships should be no less than 10 hrs/wk. and no more than 15 hrs./wk. (fall & spring semesters)
  • Beginning in spring 2007 all 1-credit paid internships should be no less than 10 hrs/wk. and no more than 20 hrs./wk. (fall & spring semesters)
  • Students may register for a 1-credit (paid or unpaid) internship for the January winter session, if the departmental faculty advisor approves it and is willing to be available during January.

MGT 5110 (Three credits) is directed at those students who would like to gain organizational experience within the Management major with the hope to land a job or to learn how this major is actually implemented in organizations.

  • Beginning in spring 2007 all 3-credit internships (paid and unpaid) should be no less than 15 hrs/wk and no more than 20 hrs./wk. (fall & spring semesters)

International Students

International students are only permitted to take internships during a given semester. Therefore, a student must be registered for fall and working during the fall semester. A student cannot register late in the fall and continue working at the internship after the semester ends. We will not be registering students after the October 31 and March 31 deadlines. Beginning a placement after these deadlines, by and large, does not permit the student to complete the hours necessary for the internship if he/she is carrying a full-time course load.

The Internship Process

Finding a sponsor

  • It is the student’s responsibility to find a sponsor and receive the sponsor’s consent for the internship.
  • You may find potential sponsors over the Internet, in Newspapers, and from referrals.

Duration

  • The normal internship experience lasts for 14-15 weeks @ about 15 hours per week.

Qualifying

  • You are qualified to embark on one-credit internship (MGT 3001/2/3) at any time in your undergraduate studies.
  • You are qualified to embark on a three (3) credits internship (MGT 5110) if: a. You are a Management Major b. You have already taken three Management classes beyond MGT 3120 and MGT 3121. c. Your GPA is over 2.5.

Applying

  • Please download an Application and Permission Form and a Performance Appraisal Form. Complete the application form and bring it to the Department Internship Coordinator for approval.
  • After approval please submit a copy of the signed Application and Permission Form to the Registrar so that s/he assigns you into a class, and submit the original to your sponsor.

Fulfill your internship responsibilities.

Receiving Credits

  • MGT 3001/2/3. A week before the academic term ends please submit the completed Performance Appraisal Form to the Department Internship Coordinator.
  • MGT5110. A week before the end of the academic term please submit a 5-7 page paper summarizing your internship experience to the Department Internship Coordinator. The paper should use current management theories and models to describe what you have learned during the internship. Please do not hesitate to criticize the organization and/ or praise it based on your learning experience.
  • It is understandable that sometimes internships do not follow exactly the academic time-table. In the case that you have not completed your internship at the end of the term you will receive a grade of INC that will be changed upon submission of proof of completion and a paper when required.
