Application process

Who is eligible to apply?

Students who have completed their Baruch core requirements are eligible to apply, i.e., the same time that you are eligible to apply to Zicklin.

When do I apply?

Applications to the IB major are evaluated over the summer for the following fall. However, we would like students to express interest in the program as early as possible. We will answer your inquires and keep you on our mailing list and provide you updates as we role out the program.

What selection criteria will be used?

Admissions will be based on a holistic evaluation of applicant essays and transcript. The selection process will be the similar to the one used in the Global Business Certificate Program. We expect most students to have a 3.0 GPA for their core courses but have not made that a firm requirement at this time.

What are the detailed admission criteria and procedures?

Information and Application for 2010

The completed application must be filled-out on-line by 5:00 p.m. on June 4, 2010. Students will be notified of admission decisions no later than July 2, 2010. Completed applications received earlier will be evaluated on a rolling basis beginning on March 30, 2010.

Admission Criteria and Procedures

  1. Process
Students must apply to be accepted into the International Business major. Enrollment in the program is subject to a limited number of openings, the initial target is 55 students. Students are admitted for a program of study that begins in the fall semester of a given academic year.
  2. Eligibility
To be eligible to apply to the International Business major, students should have been admitted to the Zicklin School of Business or be candidates for admission to it prior to the fall semester. Students are expected to have at least a 3.0 Baruch GPA for all their courses but we have not made that a firm requirement at this time.
  3. Conditions of Acceptance
The acceptance of a student into the program is conditional until they complete the pre-business curriculum. The pre-business curriculum consists of:
    • Completion of Accountancy 2101, CIS 2200, Economics 1001, Economics 1002, English 2100, Law 1101, Mathematics 2201/2206/2207/2610 or their equivalents, and Statistics 2000 with a minimum GPA of 2.25 in these courses.
    • Completion of a minimum of 45 credits with an overall GPA* of 2.25 or higher.
    • Completion of either Communication Studies 1010 or English 2150.
  4. Admission Committee
The applications for the International Business major are evaluated by the Admission Committee. The committee consists of the Director of the Weissman Center of International Business, the International Business Program Coordinator for fall 2010; and one representative from the Undergraduate Division appointed by Dean of the Zicklin School of Business. Acceptance of a student into the program requires the completion of the eight required courses before the fall Semester for which they are applying.
  5. Admission Criteria
The International Business major is designed to produce knowledgeable and well-rounded graduates who will be on course to achieve leadership positions in the area of international business. Since there are limited seats available in the program, the committee must select among many qualified candidates. Criteria used by the committee include: academic excellence, past experience, and passion for the program. Each of these criteria is described below:
    1. Academic Excellence: Students should demonstrate superior academic performance, particularly in pre-business core courses. Students should show an ability to achieve proficiency in a foreign language either through course work or through life experiences.
    2. Experience: Students provide evidence of “making a difference” in extracurricular activities, job responsibilities and/or group work in class settings.
    3. Passion for International Business: Students should show a strong passion to pursue a career in international business. Evidence of such passion is demonstrated by academic progress, life experiences, language proficiency, cross-cultural experiences and service to others.

The Admissions Committee seeks a group of well-rounded students with a passion for the study of international business. No single criterion will preclude the admission of a student; instead, applicants will be viewed holistically based on the totality of the application. The essay is a key opportunity for us to get to know you, your motivation, and ability in the international business area, so considerable care should be exercised in its crafting. If there are unique circumstances that a student believes to be important to his or her application, then please include that information in the essay. We look forward to your application and are commitment to the success of our new major. 1
