Majors and Minors

Q. How do I declare or change my major and/or track (Undergraduate Students)?

MKT majors: Students who are completing their pre-business requirements and/or have “Undeclared” as their plan or students who have an intended plan in the Weissman School or School of Public Affairs and wish to be admitted into Zicklin may fill out the Intended Major form, http://www.baruch.cuny.edu/registrar/forms.htm, and submit the completed form to the Registrar’s Office or visit the Registrar’s Office to change their plan (major and minor).

Official Zicklin students may use this form to change your plans (major and/or minor):

http://zicklin.baruch.cuny.edu/ug-plan-change-details

Official Weissman/School of Public Affairs students may use this form if you have completed all Zicklin admission requirements and wish to change your current plan (major) to a business plan and become a Zicklin student.  First you must visit Weissman or Public Affairs Dean's Office to be released from their school:

http://zicklin.baruch.cuny.edu/ug-plan-change-details

*Note: Admission is dependent on fulfillment of Zicklin admission criteria

Q. I’m a Weissman student and I want to do an “ad hoc” major. Which courses can I take from Marketing?

Weissman students can take up to 3 courses in Zicklin, of level 3000 or above, for an ad hoc major.  You can choose from the following marketing courses: MKT 3000, MKT 3400, MKT 3520, MKT 3605, MKT 4555.  Note that if you take any course other than MKT 3400, you must also take MKT 3000 as a prerequisite.

You need to first get approval for the Ad Hoc major from the Weissman Dean’s office, and then leave the paperwork for the Chair of the Marketing Department to sign.

Q. What are the requirements for the Minor in Marketing?

Zicklin students who are not majoring in International Business may take any 3 courses with the MKT designation, other than MKT 3000, to receive the minor in Marketing.  Zicklin students majoring in International Business must take MKT 3605, MKT 4420 and MKT 5750 to qualify for the minor in Marketing.  Non-Zicklin students wishing to minor in Marketing must take MKT 3000 and any 2 of the following: MKT 3400, MKT 3520, MKT 3600, MKT 3605, and MKT 4555.

Q. What are the requirements for the Minor in International Business?

The IB minor is open only to students in Zicklin.

For more information, see: http://zicklin.baruch.cuny.edu/programs/undergrad/degrees/mktg.html/international-business-minor,

or see Professor Andreas Grein (Room 12-255 VC, andreas.grein@baruch.cuny.edu, tel: 646-312-3341).

Q. I want to take a second Minor in Marketing.  What do I need to do?

The minor in Marketing is open only to students in Zicklin.   The minor requires that you take any 3 MKT courses (other than MKT 3000).  There is no form to be filled out, but in your final semester you have to tell the Degree Auditor in the Registrar’s office that you have a second minor in Marketing so that it appears on your transcript.

Permissions & Registration

Q. Can I get permission to waive a prerequisite or take it as a corequisite?

Prerequisites serve an important purpose, which is to build the foundation for an advanced course.  For this reason we do not waive prerequisites or give permission to take them as corequisites.   This applies to all MKT classes, including MKT 5750.

If you have unusual circumstances, please speak to one of the departmental advisors:

  • Sarah Demetz, Weissman Center (646 312-2073; 8th floor, 137 E 25th St.) for Internationa Business Major.
  • Professor Andreas Grein (Room 12-255 VC, andreas.grein@baruch.cuny.edu, tel: 646-312-3341) for International Business (IB) courses, the IB minor, and the International Marketing track, or
  • Professor Nermin Eyuboglu (Room 11-279, nermin.eyuboglu@baruch.cuny.edu, tel: 646-312-3293) for all other courses and tracks.

Note that scheduling conflicts do NOT constitute a valid reason to waive a prerequisite.

Q. Can I get permission to get into a class that is closed?

Undergraduate students: All waitlists will be processed through CUNYfirst starting Spring 2015. All 1000, 2000, and 3000-level course waitlists are processed on a first-come, first-served basis. 4000 and 5000-level course waitlists will be processed based on seniority, and waitlist positions for these courses are adjusted based on seniority.  Zicklin students who have filed for graduation are given priority.  Please refer to form which can be found at: http://baruch.az1.qualtrics.com/SE/?SID=SV_8e7rxqwSv5S6nDT

Please note that professors and departments are not permitted to grant permission to register for closed sections.

MS students: see Patricia Lewis or Taneisha Green in the Graduate Academic Services Office (13-227 VC),

MBA students: see Elizabeth Figini in the MBA Office (13-286 VC).

Q. Can I get permission to register for MKT 3000 Marketing Foundations?

The department is not authorized to give permission for this course.  You need to go to the Dean’s Office (13-270 VC).

Q. I have taken the prerequisite but am not able to register for the course.  Why is this?

The problem may be that (a) the prerequisite you took was not the right one, (b) you have a hold on your record, or (c) you are not enrolled in the Zicklin School of Business. In cases (b) and (c), you can go to the Dean’s Office (13-270 VC) to investigate your options.

Q. How do I register for an Independent Study (MKT 5000, IBS 5000 or MKT 9799)?  Can it be used as an elective for the major?

You need to find an instructor who is willing to guide you, and the study must be on a topic that is not covered in an existing course.  You should give the instructor a proposal (indicating the topic, how you plan to study it, the deliverables and the timeline).  Once the instructor approves it, he/she should email the proposal to the Chair and say that they are willing to guide the student.  We will then set up the permission for you to take the course.

MKT 5000 can be used as an elective for the Marketing track in the major (undergraduate).  IBS 5000 can be used as an elective for the IB major (undergraduate).  MKT 9799 can be used as an elective for the Marketing major (graduate).  You may only take an Independent Study once in your program.

Q. I am not enrolled in the Zicklin School of Business.  Can I get permission to take a class in your department?

The department is not authorized to give permission for non-Zicklin students.  You need to go to the Dean’s Office (13-270 VC).

Miscellaneous

Q. How can I transfer credit from a semester at another school?

You need to see a Baruch Academic Advisor in Room 5-215 VC and/or discuss the matter with Admissions. Graduate students should discuss with Patricia Lewis/Taneisha Green (MS) or Elizabeth Figini (MBA).

Q. How can I get an internship for credit (i.e., BUS 3001/3002/3003 or MKT 5100)?  Can MKT 5100 be used as an elective for the major?

You must arrange your own internship, and you must be a marketing major.  For BUS 3001/3002/3003 you must be a junior or senior; for MKT 5100 you must be a senior.  For more information, see the handout on Internships or contact Professor Gloria Thomas (Room 12-256 VC, gloria.thomas@baruch.cuny.edu, tel: 646-312-3349).  MKT 5100 cannot be used as an elective for the Marketing major.

Q. I need a “major declaration form” to qualify for financial aid or to graduate.  Where can I get this form?

That form no longer exists.  Once you are enrolled in the Zicklin School, you can change your major or minor online at http://zicklin.baruch.cuny.edu/programs/undergrad/services.  If you were sent to the Marketing Department by the Registrar or Academic Advisement Office, please go back to that office and get a temporary major code for financial aid purposes.
