Operations Research and Quantitative Methods

Operations research and quantitative methods programs emphasize the methodology of decision making through the use of structural models describing the internal and external activities of an organization. The operations research programs at Baruch College are housed in the Department of Statistics and Computer Information Systems and are the only such programs offered by The City University of New York. Our faculty in operations research have expertise in many important research areas in the field, including mathematical programming, stochastic modeling, and simulation.

This is an excellent time to be considering a major in operations research: the U.S. Department of Labor has indicated that operations research will be one of the fastest growing fields during the next decade. A recent article in U.S. News & World Report listed operations research as one of the 20 "hot" job tracks; this was subsequently corroborated in a New York Times article. We believe that graduate studies in operations research at Baruch College will be both rewarding and challenging and will help you achieve your achieving your career goals.

We offer both an MS degree in Quantitative Methods and Modeling and an MBA degree in operations research, full time or part time. Either degree program will prepare you for a productive career in business since you will gain a combination of practical knowledge and research skills. If your goal is to eventually pursue a Ph.D. degree, you can be assured that our program will provide an excellent foundation for you.

At Baruch, we tailor the particular program of study to a student's interests as much as possible. Besides the project, you will have the opportunity, if you so desire, to do independent study with a faculty member of your choosing.

The Operations Research Area, together with the Department of Mathematics, have recently instituted a joint 150-credit degree program offering a BA with a major in mathematics and an MS in operations research. Eligible students may begin graduate study in operations research prior to completion of the BA degree.
