Executive Master of Science in Management of Human Resource and Global Leadership - Curriculum

CORE COURSES

  • Staffing and Personnel Psychology (PSY 9796)

This course covers critical issues in personnel selection including such topics as job analysis, competency modeling, recruitment, employment testing, fairness, validation designs, performance evaluation, compensation and managerial assessment. The focus is on the selection and placement of individual employees in work organizations.

  • Quantitative Methods for Human Resource Management and Business Decisions (STA 9708)

This course will introduce students to quantitative and statistical techniques used to understand human resource management and organizational data. Students will learn to use these tools to examine trends, make predictions, and explore relationships in critical HR areas.

  • Design of Psychological Research in Work Organizations I (PSY 9703)

This course will introduce students to the research methodologies used in businesses to study and investigate the behaviors of employees and the performance of work organizations. The students will learn to use a wide range of experimental and non-experimental methods to understand and solve business problems.

  • Design of Psychological Research in Work Organizations II (PSY9760)

The course focuses on how to measure the critical competencies required in the modern business world using state-of-the-art assessment methods. This course will prepare students in how to design and implement measures of important organizational variables and outcomes.

ADVANCED COURSES

Five advanced courses from the following list will be selected by the Department of Psychology, in consultation with International Executive Programs:

  • Performance Assessment (PSY 9786)

This course provides a background in research and practices in performance and competency assessment. A number of assessment strategies, data gathering procedures, decision making strategies, and procedural aspects are addressed.

  • Leadership (PSY 9751)

This course provides a background in modern leadership theory, power, influence, and managerial transformation of work organizations. Effective leadership styles and how they influence organizational culture, climate, conflict and negotiation, change management and motivation, job satisfaction, and performance are discussed.

  • Training and Development (PSY 9786)

This course will prepare students to design effective training and development programs aimed at helping employees acquire the critical competencies required to be effective leaders in work organizations.  Various cutting edge developmental techniques such as executive coaching, experiential learning and web-based/multimedia knowledge management systems are discussed.

  • Cross-Cultural Human Resources (PSY 9786)

This course will focus on gaining global perspectives on cross-cultural issues as they apply to human resource management.   A cross-cultural lens will be developed and applied to a number of human resource management issues.

  • Motivation (PSY 9786)

The purpose of this course is to review theories and research surrounding the central question of what motivates individuals to work. The class will explore theories centered on human needs, values, goals, and emotions, and will apply these theories to explain work performance, commitment, turnover, selection, compensation, and other individual and organizational outcomes.

  • Teams and Groups Processes in Organizations (PSY 9786) 

This course offers an introduction and exploration of theory, research, and practice of teams and group dynamics. Methods and techniques utilized in the investigation of teams and group processes will be demonstrated and critically examined. Human resource management issues of using teams and groups to structure work are addressed.

  • Career Development (PSY 9786)

This course offers an introduction to theories and research about careers, with a focus on both traditional models and more contemporary approaches. Issues related to careers of individuals, such as developmental stages, predictors of career success versus derailment, as well as the role of the organization in career development, including organizational processes that can facilitate employees’ career development are explored.

  • Management of Diversity in Organizations (PSY 9786)

This course offers a foundation for understanding the construct of diversity in organizations and the implications of working in a diverse organizational environment. The course will familiarize students with the theory, research, and practice on the effects of diversity on individual, group, and organizational outcomes.

  • Attitudes and Emotions in Organizations (PSY 9786)

This course presents a background on employee attitudes and affect (e.g., emotions, mood) in the workplace. These include both the influence of organizations on the experience and expression of affect and the influence of affect on organizational processes. Emphasis is placed on the interactions between human resource management processes and employees’ affective reactions. 

  • Organizational Development (PSY 9786)

This course provides a background in the process of organizational development and change management. Theory, research, and practice on the psychological processes involved in organizational development and change are addressed. Emphasis is placed on assessing and measuring changes, identifying need for change, types of change, and managing change.

APPLIED RESEARCH (Required)

  • Applied Research Experience Part I and Part II (PSY 99001 & PSY 99002)

Applied Research Experience Part I and Part II will be integrated as components in all ten of the other courses that students will take. Students will gain experience in all aspects of the research process including generating hypotheses, reviewing research literature, creating a viable research design methodology, collecting research data, analyzing data, and determining results.

CAPSTONE COURSE (Required)

  • Organizational Behavior and Theory (PSY 9797)

This course covers critical issues of organizational behavior and theory including organizational culture and climate, organizational design, conflict and negotiation, and the interaction between organizational behaviors and management of human resources.
