Campus and Community
Addressing the tension between academic institutions embarking upon ambitious building programs and their neighbors — who have a stake in the same resources — the CUNY Urban Consortium held a breakfast seminar in collaboration with the Institute for Urban Design entitled “Campus and Community.” David Neuman, the former university architect and associate vice provost for planning at Stanford and Mark Burstein, Vice President for Campus Planning at Columbia, discussed the issues that each institution has faced and the strategies for cooperation that they developed. James Lima, President of the Governor’s Island Preservation and Education Corporation, described future plans for that facility. Marilyn Taylor of Skidmore Owings & Merrill and Jean Marie Gath of Hardy Holzman Pfeiffer were respondents.
