Professional Education: Certificate Program
The real estate industry provides housing, work space, and shopping for millions of people living and visiting the New York metropolitan region. It is a major employer and investment vehicle and a key source of tax revenue. The Certificate Program in Real Estate is offered under the joint auspices of the Steven L. Newman Real Estate Institute and Baruch College's Division of Continuing and Professional Studies. The Program provides skill-focused practical knowledge of professional real estate practices. Areas of concentration are offered within the Certificate Program:
- Individuals preparing for careers within the real estate industry, especially in metropolitan New York, can focus on one of four specialties: investment and finance, residential, sales and brokerage, development and management.
- Individuals working—or desirous of doing so—for housing, planning or land-use related government agencies in metropolitan New York government or for not-for-profit community or management organizations.
Required courses provide a basic understanding of the technical skills required to advance in the real estate industry. The substance of each course concerns a specific area of real estate activity: brokerage, finance, development, marketing and law. Persons completing this sequence of foundation courses will understand each area of real estate activity and begin to make career determinations within the industry.
Elective courses provide an opportunity for students to gain additional skills in particular areas and to acquire competence with some of the technical tools and software generally used in the industry.
The Newman Institute Certificate Program in Real Estate has been carefully structured by practicing real estate professionals to provide the knowledge and training necessary for a rewarding career in this increasingly technical field.
Through this program serious students can benefit from the opportunity to:
- engage in more than 300 hours of classroom study taught by active professionals in all areas of real estate;
- begin to develop specialized skills in one or more areas, work at one or more real estate firms as an intern and participate in real business situations;
- interact with top professionals inside and outside the classroom.
Those who desire specialization may select elective courses which will round out their skills in a particular area.
Those who are uncertain about which areas of real estate they would like to enter will be able to learn about all types of career opportunities in real estate.
The Institute does provide career counseling and endeavors to assist students by providing the opportunity for internships or positions with leading New York real estate firms. The courses offered under the Certificate Program of the Newman Institute provide students with certain of the professional educational requirements for various New York State licensing programs.
