Sustainability Courses and Certificates

Index: Borough of Manhattan, 1... Digital ID: 1511723. New York Public Library

Certificate courses

In 2007, through our Certificate in Real Estate program, we offered “Sustainability and ‘Green’ Building Performance for Real Estate Professionals,” the first such course approved by New York State for real estate broker continuing education units. In spring 2008 we offered five sustainability courses. In fall 2008 we will offer a more comprehensive set, and our curriculum will continue to grow.

The subject of sustainability is exceptionally broad, affecting projects of all descriptions: new construction, renovation, and preservation; work on building exteriors and interiors; commercial and residential property; the for-profit and nonprofit realms; transportation and civil-works projects along with conventional "bricks & mortar." Thus, we’re also integrating sustainability content into many of our existing courses. Finance, marketing, project management, and facilities maintenance courses are just a few of those affected.
Among the many industry professionals who can benefit from sustainability course content are developers, planners, architects, people working in design and construction, engineers, contractors, subcontractors and suppliers, building owners, property managers, facilities managers and maintenance staff, tenants, realtors, attorneys, insurance agents, bankers, corporate purchasing agents, sustainability officers, CEOs, CFOs, and other top executives who want to integrate sustainability into their strategic plans.

New certificate in sustainability

Students in our certificate program who concentrate in sustainability courses will qualify for a formal certificate that can lead to careers in what is a new and growing professional field: Sustainability Officer.

Onsite custom workshops

Tailored to our clients’ corporate cultures and strategic goals, our onsite workshops deliver training in an efficient, cost-effective, user-friendly way. We’re now developing workshops on sustainability that can serve government agencies, large property owners, energy suppliers, and tenant and community groups.

Curriculum development

To determine what course content can best serve our students and clients and how it can best be structured and delivered, we’re conducting a review of education and training needs under the guidance of a leading sustainability educator.

This review includes an examination of standards of excellence established by parties in the field, such as LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) criteria defined by the US Green Buildings Council, goals set forth in NYC’s PlaNYC2030, the federal Energy Star Program (which is used by the US General Services Administration, the largest property manager in the country), and guidance from New York State Energy Research & Development Authority (NYSERDA).
