Sustainability Initiatives at the Newman Institute
Some of our sustainability initiatives build upon and expand past efforts. Others break new ground.
Training and education. Courses offered through our Certificate in Real Estate program train the next generation of real estate professionals and enable experienced professionals to deepen and broaden their expertise.
Under the guidance of a leading sustainability educator, we’re now developing a comprehensive approach to sustainability education. Based on a thoroughgoing review of the needs in this field, we’re expanding our existing set of sustainability courses, creating a new certificate in sustainability, creating new onsite, custom workshops on sustainability, and integrating sustainability content into existing courses. The results will be an extraordinary resource to the city’s real estate community.

Research. We are significantly scaling up our research into issues related to sustainability. Through public events, exhibits, and in print and online, we’ll share research findings with a wide public.
Public events. In fall 2008, we’ll host a major conference on sustainability for the real estate community. Many more public events will follow.
Sustainability web site. To augment our sustainability courses and complement other initiatives, in collaboration with CUNY’s Building Performance Lab, we’re developing “NYC Building Performance,” a web site designed to help commercial building owners, managers, and tenants make their properties top “green” performers.
Free webinar viewings. Organized by the Building Performance Lab, this series of live online courses on how to improve building performance can be viewed at our Institute. As the Lab says, “Group webinar viewings are great opportunities to learn about the rapidly evolving sustainability market while networking with other people in the building sector.”
Partnering. We partner closely with CUNY’s Building Performance Lab, which is guided by a remarkable Stakeholder Consortium that comprises a diverse cross-section of the real estate industry. We’re now forming new partnerships, joint ventures, and strategic alliances with parties in the commercial, academic, nonprofit, and government sectors.
