Social Security Number (SSN) Applications
This information is presented to describe the process that new international students must go through in order to apply for and receive SSN number. Receiving a SSN number in a timely manner is essential to assist students in receiving payment for their awards without undue delays.
All International Students
All international students must report to the Office of International Students at The Graduate Center as soon as they arrive in the United States. The Office of International Students must verify the immigration documents and eligibility for student status, and remove the registration hold.
All Baruch International Students who need to obtain a Social Security Number (SSN)
Students who have been awarded teaching or research positions must apply for a Social Security Number (SSN) from the US Social Security Administration (SSA). A major requirement of this application is that the student’s CUNY employer must write a letter to the US SSA confirming the student’s employment. A student will receive the letter from the Ph.D. Office in Business. See: Sample of Employer Verification Letter for Student SSN Application.
The Office of International Students
The student must then bring the letter to the Office of International Students. We will write a letter to the appropriate US government office confirming the details of the award letter and verifying the immigration status of the student. At that time, we will also review the application form and the specific procedures for completing the application.
