QuickStart Program

Knowledge of the basics in accounting, finance, mathematics, Microsoft Excel,  advanced Excel, statistics, and technology is essential for required MBA courses.  QuickStart is a voluntary pre-term program designed to help students learn the fundamentals in these areas before embarking on graduate courses.  Self-tests (along with answers) are provided to help admitted students determine which of these modules they should consider taking.  Modules are offered in August and January for students admitted in fall and spring.

For more information visit QuickStart Announcement / Calendar / Registration Form.

English language support courses for students whose first language is not English:

Specially designed modules in Grammar Troubleshooting and American English Pronunciation are required for students whose first language is not English.  Students will have the opportunity to waive one or both modules by  taking the English language support course waiver exam. Additional information about the modules and exam is sent to students upon admission.

Flex-Time MBA Core and Breadth Courses

The core and breadth courses provide all students with a common body of knowledge and a comprehensive introduction to the academic disciplines underlying graduate business education.

No waivers are granted for required core and breadth courses. However, students who have completed 15 semester hours in a core/breadth area within the seven years prior to enrolling in the MBA program can petition the Office of Graduate Academic Services to substitute an advanced-level course in the same area for the core requirement.

Eligible students should apply to the Office of Graduate Academic Services for core course substitutions as soon as possible after reserving a place in the MBA program. Priority is given to evaluating substitution requests for courses taken in the first semester, i.e., ACC 9110, ACC 9112, CIS 9000, ECO 9708, ECO 9709, MKT 9703, STA 9708.

Majors and The General MBA Option

Students may choose from a wide array of MBA majors, or tailor a major to their specific needs through The General MBA Option. The accountancy program is intended for students seeking CPA licensure, and requires course work beyond the usual four-course major. Students not seeking CPA licensure may take selected accountancy courses through the General MBA Option or as general electives.

It is possible to pursue a dual major by applying the three general electives towards a second major and, if eligible, replacing the international elective with a fourth course in the major (see below). Students who require the international elective or who wish to pursue an internship for general elective credit, will need to take one or two additional courses for the dual major. International students cannot extend the duration of their program in order to pursue a dual major.

If four courses are completed in a single discipline and they do not correspond to designated courses in the major, students are considered to be pursuing the General MBA Option, unless permission is received for course substitutions.

International Elective

The international elective course allows students to further internationalize their knowledge of business functions, and complements their core courses in a similar manner. Flex-Time MBA students choose one course from the list of choices below. Students who take a designated international elective course as part of their major have the option of replacing the international elective with one additional general elective. The same course cannot be used to satisfy more than one degree requirement.

General Electives

Students customize their program by selecting three general electives from among any 9000-level courses given by departments offering courses in the MBA program (or interdisciplinary courses). Students may include one graduate course designated "PAF" in the School of Public Affairs or "COM, "ENG," or "MTH" in the Weissman School of Arts and Sciences, provided the prerequisite or equivalent has been satisfied, and with permission of the appropriate school. The general electives may be courses within or outside the major area, and may include courses on the list of international elective choices.

Eligible students may apply internship credit towards their general elective requirements.  Further information about the internship is available on the Graduate Career Management Center Web site.
