About the Program

On July 7, 2014  New York State enacted its Compassionate Care Act becoming the 23rd state allowing medical marijuana. Over the next 18 months the New York State Department of Health will establish guidelines for potential dispensaries, which can be pharmacies, Article 28 facilities (hospitals, nursing homes, community health centers, hospices), non-profit organizations, or for-profit businesses; train and certify doctors and caregivers; and even set the price. Yet, the Act is already controversial because it limits legalized medical marijuana to the treatment of cancer, HIV/AIDS, ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease), Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, spinal cord tissue damage, epilepsy, inflammatory bowel disease (including Crohn’s Disease, neuropathies and Huntington’s Disease).  Potential dispensaries will have to evaluate participation given that the sale of marijuana still violates federal laws and thus payments cannot be deposited into FDIC banks and may endanger federal funding.  On October 1st, Baruch College will host a panel discussion to explore the Compassionate Care Act’s effect on medical care in our area.
