*While Calculus II is not an official preliminary course, the advising team will review your prior transcripts for advanced calculus (Calculus II) when reviewing your records for STA 9708 and Calculus I.
As both Calculus I and II are undergraduate courses, graduate students need to request permission to enroll by emailing ZicklinMSPrograms@baruch.cuny.edu.
Course Planning Information
- If you are waived from the preliminary courses (Calculus I and/or STA 9708), but completed equivalent courses many years ago and do not readily recall the material, consider re-taking these courses or reviewing the material on your own.
- Please review the calculus section below for a link to a tutorial and for permission instructions.
- OPR 9721 Introduction to Quantitative Modeling is offered in Fall only. The preliminary courses (Calculus I and/or STA 9708), may be taken as a co-requisite (instead of prerequisite) for OPR 9721.
- OPR 9730 Simulation Modeling and Analysis is offered in Spring only.
- STA 9700 Applied Regression Analysis and OPR/STA 9750 Basic Software Tools For Data Analysis are offered in both fall and spring.
- Students should take BUS 9551 Business Communication I within their first two semesters. BUS 9551 is offered every fall, spring, and summer.
- STA 9715 Applied Probability is a highly recommended elective. The prerequisites are STA 9708 and Calculus II. Waiver of the Calculus II prerequisite is based on 3 credits of advanced calculus (e.g., Calculus II) completed with minimum grade of C-. If you have not completed an advanced calculus course, then try to take Calculus II as soon as possible.
Waiver Criteria for Preliminary Courses
Calculus I

Calculus - Review for those Waived; Instructions for Registration if Required
If you plan to take STA 9715 Applied Probability or STA 9719 Foundations of Statistical Inference for your electives, calculus is very important. Even if you are waived from Calculus I and Calculus II, it is imperative that you review and know your calculus well before attending these classes. Here is a link to a very thorough Calculus Tutorial which you should go through and practice before classes begins. https://www.khanacademy.org/math/calculus-home
Students who have completed calculus more than 5 years ago may want to consider repeating calculus.
If you are required to take Calculus I (or Calculus II for advanced electives), note that they are undergraduate courses and the grades are not calculated in the grade point average [GPA].
