Zoombombing, Cambridge Analytica, AI bias, misinformation, hate speech…when tech companies and researchers come under fire, people wonder: why are they not thinking about potential harms? Unintended consequences of technology are a significant social issue, and when we “move fast and break things” it’s ethical considerations that often get pushed to the side. Like technical debt, the implied cost of future bug fixes when we rush to release technology, ethical debt is what we accumulate when we don’t consider ethical and social implications during the design process.
How can we help technologists speculate about the future? Also how might we understand real impacts of technological harms on everyone, and give everyone the knowledge and tools to be more critical of technology? Join the Robert Zicklin Center for Corporate Integrity on March 1st as we welcome Casey Fiesler for a moderated discussion with Professor Yafit Lev-Aretz, Director of the Robert Zicklin Center’s Program on Tech Ethics.

Moderated by Yafit Lev-Aretz, Assistant Professor of Law at Zicklin School of Business, Baruch College
Casey Fiesler is an assistant professor in Information Science (and Computer Science by courtesy) at University of Colorado Boulder, as well as a Fellow in the Silicon Flatirons Center for Law, Technology, and Entrepreneurship at University of Colorado Law School. She researches and teaches in the areas of technology ethics, internet law and policy, and online communities. Her work on research ethics for data science, ethics education in computing, and broadening participation in computing is supported by the National Science Foundation, and she is the recipient of an NSF CAREER Award. Also a public scholar, she is a frequent commentator and speaker on topics of technology ethics and policy, and her research has been covered everywhere from The New York Times to Teen Vogue, but she’s most proud of her TikToks. She holds a PhD in Human-Centered Computing from Georgia Tech and a JD from Vanderbilt Law School.
Tech Ethics at the Robert Zicklin Center for Corporate Integrity:
Professor Yafit Lev-Aretz is the Director of the Robert Zicklin Center’s Program on Tech Ethics. Tech Ethics examines the ethical dilemmas associated with the various technology applications, including in the context of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Big Data. The tech ethics program is designed to increase awareness of such ethical dilemmas and foster a conversation on the positive and negative impacts of technology. The program also aims to equip future leaders with the insights and perspectives needed to make complex decisions about the use of technology in business and society.
Professor Lev-Aretz is a tech policy expert, researching the fascinating relationship between the law, technology, and society. She has written about information privacy, the growing use of algorithmic decision-making, intrusive means of news dissemination, choice architecture in the age of big data, and the ethical challenges posed by machine learning and artificially intelligent systems. Additionally, her research highlights the legal treatment of beneficial uses of data, such as data philanthropy and the data for good movement, striving to strike a delicate balance between solid privacy protections and competing values.
