SUMMARY:Teaching Trading\, Liquidity and Market Structure: An Equity Markets Conference
DESCRIPTION:Date:\nPre-Conference reception: March 5\, 2020 \nConference: March 6\, 2020 \nLocation: Baruch College\nZicklin School of Business\n151 East 25th Street\nWasserman Trading Floor\nSubotnick Center\nNew York\, NY 10010\nwww.baruch.cuny.edu/map.html \n\n\nOrganizers:\nDeniz Ozenbas\nCo-Director\, Schwartz Center\, Baruch College\nFeliciano School of Business\nMontclair State University \nRobert A. Schwartz\nCo-Director\, Schwartz Center\, Baruch College\nZicklin School of Business\nBaruch College\, CUNY \nBruce W. Weber\nLerner College of Business & Economics\nUniversity of Delaware \n\n\nSponsors:\nRobert A. Schwartz Center for Trading & Financial Markets Research\, Baruch College\, CUNY \n \nObjective: \nThe objective of this seminar is twofold: (a) to call attention to how education concerning trading\, liquidity and market structure topics can be integrated into business school programs\, and (b) to enhance the dialogue between industry professionals and academics. In industry\, trading is recognized as a professional activity; in academia\, it typically is not. Students today can complete their business school courses without knowing about trading costs\, liquidity\, the complexities of price discovery\, and the realities of market structure. They can graduate clueless about what it takes for professional investors to implement investment decisions in real world\, illiquid marketplaces. This knowledge is important\, not only for people at trading desks\, but also for portfolio managers\, corporate executives\, regulators\, and technology developers. \nComputer Simulation: \nSimulations are increasingly prominent in business school education. An equity market simulation\, TraderEx\, will be used in the seminar. TraderEx is an interactive simulation model developed by Schwartz and Weber that enables participants to enter orders into a computer-driven market that generates order flow\, and responds directly to participants’ orders. Continuous order driven markets are simulated\, along with call auctions\, a block trading facility\, and hybrid combinations. Participants gain experience by competing with each other in a networked environment. \n\nThursday\, March 5\, 2020\n\n6:30 p.m.\nPre-conference Reception – Location TBA\n\nFriday\, March 6\, 2020\n\n\n8:30 a.m. \n\n\nRegistration and Coffee \n\n\n9:00 a.m. \n\n\nWelcoming Remarks: Fenwick Huss\, Dean\, Zicklin School of Business\, Baruch College \n\n\n9:10 a.m. \n\n\nOpening Remarks: Ozenbas\, Schwartz and Weber \n\n\n9:15 a.m. \n\n\nLiquidity: An Elusive Variable: Reto Francioni and Schwartz \n\n\n10:00 a.m. \n\n\nOpen Discussion \n\n\n10:15 a.m. \n\n\nCoffee Break \n\n\n10:45 a.m. \n\n\nPanel: Industry Perspectives on Trading\, Liquidity and Market Structure\nModerator: Larry Tabb\, Tabb Group \nPanelists:\nPhil Mackintosh\, Chief Economist\, Nasdaq\nGiuseppe Nuti\, Head of Machine Learning & AI\, UBS Global Markets\nJim Ross\, Managing Director\, Coda Markets\nJim Toes\, President & CEO\, Security Traders Association \n\n \n\n11:30 a.m. \n\n\nSimulated Trading – Order Driven Markets: Ozenbas\, Schwartz and Weber \n\n\n1:00 p.m. \n\n\nLunch \n\n\n1:45 p.m. \n\n\nTopics for Business School Curriculum\nFinance courses: Ozenbas\nComputer Information Systems courses: Weber \n\n\n2:15 p.m. \n\n\nPanel: Academic Perspectives on Trading\, Liquidity and Market Structure\nModerator: Professor Lin Peng\, Baruch College \nPanelists:\nDeniz Ozenbas\nAsli Ascioglu\, Bryant University\nShankar Narayanan\, City University of New York\nLei Yu\, New York University \n\n \n\n3:00 p.m. \n\n\nOpen Discussion \n\n\n3:15 p.m. \n\n\nCoffee Break \n\n\n3:45 p.m. \n\n\nSimulated Trading – Hybrid Markets: Ozenbas\, Schwartz and Weber \n\n\n5:00 p.m. \n\n\nSeminar Concludes \n\n\n\n\n\nRegistration\nThe registration fee is $275.
