SUMMARY:The Difficult Truth about ESG Investing
DESCRIPTION:About the Program\nMany investors and financial professionals have embraced ESG as a way of more closely aligning capital markets with human values. Advocates of the movement believe that a focus on the environmental\, social and governance elements of for-profit companies will both help to solve many of the world’s most pressing problems – climate change foremost among them – while continuing to earn healthy returns for corporations and investors alike. Further\, numbers suggest that the market has responded: according to the Economist magazine\, a third of all money under management today may be influenced by the methods of ESG. \nDespite the popularity of ESG\, many skeptics remain on Wall Street and in the academy. They claim that proponents of ESG are simply offering an unproven way for investors to feel good about the ethical implications of their portfolio choices without making any sacrifice in return. The Robert Zicklin Center for Corporate Integrity is delighted to host one such skeptic\, NYU Stern’s Prof. Aswath Damodaran\, a leading educator and thinker on corporate finance. He will address the practical and moral shortcomings of ESG in an in-person lunchtime discussion.   \nAbout the Speaker\nProfessor Aswath Damodaran – Kerschner Family Chair in Finance Education \nAswath Damodaran holds the Kerschner Family Chair in Finance Education and is Professor of Finance at New York University Stern School of Business. Before coming to Stern\, he also lectured in Finance at the University of California\, Berkeley. \nProfessor Damodaran received a B.A. in Accounting from Madras University and a post graduate diploma in Management from the Indian Institute of Management. He earned an M.B.A. (1981) and then Ph.D. (1985)\, both in Finance\, from the University of California\, Los Angeles. \nProfessor Damodaran’s contributions to the field of Finance have been recognized many times over. He has been the recipient of Giblin\, Glucksman\, and Heyman Fellowships\, a David Margolis Teaching Excellence Fellowship\, and the Richard L. Rosenthal Award for Innovation in Investment Management and Corporate Finance. \nHis skill and enthusiasm in the classroom garnered him the Schools of Business Excellence in Teaching Award in 1988\, and the Distinguished Teaching award from NYU in 1990. His student accolades are no less impressive: he has been voted “Professor of the Year” by the graduating M.B.A. class nine times during his career at NYU. \nIn addition to myriad publications in academic journals\, Professor Damodaran is the author of several highly-regarded and widely-used academic texts on Valuation\, Corporate Finance\, and Investment Management. \nProfessor Damodaran currently teaches Corporate Finance and Valuation to the MBAs\, and his interests lie in disentangling value drivers and understanding market pricing and behavior. \nSchedule:\n12:00 pm – Registration and Lunch  \n12:30 pm – Presentation \nRegistration:\nComplimentary registration is required to attend this program.
