Salamanca
Known for its breathtaking Renaissance architecture, the town of Salamanca is an ideal place to learn Spanish. Bathed in the dusk sunlight, Salamanca’s Villamayor stone buildings turn golden, giving the city its nickname as the “Golden City” (“la Ciudad Dorada”). The Plaza Major in Salamanca is widely considered to be the most beautiful square in Spain.
Salamanca is, however, also a quintessentially university town. The University of Salamanca, founded in 1218, still dominates the city. Over 20 percent of the city’s 160,000 inhabitants are students, giving the city a youthful vibrancy that nicely complements Salamanca’s venerable past. This contrast can be seen nightly on the Plaza Mayor.
In the 15th century, the first Grammar of the Castilian Language was produced in Salamanca. Since then, the city has cultivated its reputation as a center of “pure” Castillian, making it a favored destination for students who wish to learn Castillian Spanish
