An Elevator Ride with a Lifelong Mentor

Zicklin News recently traveled to the 13th floor with Karl Lang, PhD, who is the executive officer of the Zicklin School’s PhD Program in Business. Here’s what we learned.

“I just got off the phone with an alumna I’m still mentoring, who got her PhD in 2022. I mentor alumni all the time; it’s a lesser-known benefit of our PhD program. This alumna hasn’t been offered tenure yet and is getting a little frustrated at times. I helped her understand about playing the long game: Keep revising and submitting articles to journals, keep applying for research funding, keep developing a strong teaching portfolio, build strong relationships with colleagues, and network with your research community. Keep focused and don’t lose hope—we’ve all gone through that process.

“The doctoral program is very different from our graduate and undergraduate programs because in our BBA, MS, and MBA programs, we’re training students to join the business world. But in our PhD program, we’re training future academics to join our world of higher education. So in a sense, we’re training our successors.”
