Zicklin Leader Honored as First-Generation Academic

Raised in Detroit by a blind grandmother who taught her household budgeting, Senior Associate Dean Paquita Davis-Friday was the first in her family to graduate from college. She went on to earn a PhD from the University of Michigan and become a professor of accountancy at the Zicklin School. Leading by Example: Jemima Louis (EMBA HCA, ’23)

Jemima Louis is changing lives, one smile at a time. The St. Lucia native is an attending dentist at Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx, where she treats dental patients in an on-site clinic and trains dental residents in how to do the same. For most, that would be plenty challenging. But Dr. Louis is also enrolled in the Zicklin School’s Executive MBA in Healthcare Administration Program….

Some firms struggled to survive during the pandemic, but others found opportunities to leverage their brands and technology.  Meet Guy Kawasaki, former marketing and branding expert at Apple and Google and now Chief Evangelist at graphic design platform Canva, which ranks #7 on the Forbes 2020 “C​loud 100” list. Larry Zicklin (BBA, ’57) and Scott Newbert, Lawrence N. Field Chair in Entrepreneurship and Academic Director of the Lawrence N. Field Programs in Entrepreneurship, will discuss with Guy his career path in marketing, how his views on entrepreneurship and innovation have evolved during the pandemic, and what he envisions for the future. With an introduction from Dean Fenwick Huss and a Q&A led by Professor Gwen Webb.

Alumna Erica Banach (MBA, ’11) has joined Marcus & Millichap Capital Corporation as vice president, capital markets.

Professor Lauren Block (Allen G. Aaronson Department of Marketing & International Business) co-published research with Zicklin alum Sara Baskentli (PhD, ’18) showing that purchasing or consuming a food or beverage item cold (as opposed to hot) is perceived to be less satiating and thus leads to additional food and drink purchases, which might impact consumer well-being.

Undergraduate Jehmehl Fair (BBA, ’23) has been chosen as a New York Collegiate Scholar by the Institute for Responsible Citizenship, which prepares promising young African-American men for leadership roles.

Alumnus Gabriel Foreman (MBA, ’16), co-founder of Duro UAS, which manufactures underwater drones to monitor water quality, has been named a 2021 Young Professional by Water Quality Products magazine.

Undergraduate Laura Guzman (BBA, ’21) has won a digital marketing internship at Mediahub.

Alumna Rhonda Hadi (PhD, ’14) was recently appointed Associate Dean for Diversity and Inclusion at the Said Business School, University of Oxford.

Alumnus Carl Heastie (MBA, ’07), the 100th Speaker of the New York State Assembly, was featured in a Baruch College video for Black History Month.
