Zicklin School Welcomes Elliott Dawes, Baruch’s New Executive Chief Diversity Officer

Elliott Dawes, JD, LLM, a civil rights lawyer and higher education leader, has joined Baruch College as the head of its Office of Diversity, Compliance, and Equity Initiatives. Previously he was the Chief Diversity Officer for Institutional Equity and Inclusion at SUNY Empire State College.

Deep Dive: Gabriel Foreman (MBA, ’16)

Gabriel Foreman, a co-founder of an autonomous technology company, has come a long way since hatching the idea for his company at the Zicklin School of Business in 2014. Alumnus Robert Bellaflores (BBA, ’87) has been appointed Chief Financial Officer of LMP Automotive Holdings.

Undergraduates Andrew Chen (BBA, ’23) and Arafat Ismail (BBA, ’23) each won $1,000 in the National Cyber Scholarship Competition for college students.

Alumnus Winston Chiu (BBA, ’07) was named one of the “40 Under 40 Rising Food Stars in NYC Food Policy” by Hunter College New York City Food Policy Center.

Professor Marc Edelman (Department of Law) was quoted in Law Week Colorado about the U.S. Supreme Court’s recent ruling against the National Collegiate Athletic Association. He wrote an article in Forbes on best practices for college athletics departments in light of the ruling; another Forbes article about college athletes on student visas in which he quoted his colleague, Professor Allan Wernick (see below); and another one predicting NCAA deregulation as the next step.

Alumnus Alan D. Gaines (BBA, ’76) has joined the board of directors of the Limestone Boat Company.

Assistant Professor Sophia Gilbukh (William Newman Department of Real Estate) has won a Eugene M. Lang Junior Faculty Fellowship. She talked about her research with Zicklin News. She was also interviewed in The Real Deal about the rise in the number of new real estate agents.

Alumna Cristina Guglielmetti (MBA, ’05), a Certified Financial Planner, was quoted in a New York Times article about financial planning for new graduates.

Assistant Professor Youngdeok Hwang (Paul H. Chook Department of Information Systems and Statistics) co-published research showing that people’s consumption of streaming music declined significantly during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Associate Professor Yehuda Izhakian (Bert W. Wasserman Department of Economics and Finance) co-published a blog post on risk and ambiguity in the financial markets.

Professors Debbie Kaminer and David Rosenberg (Department of Law) co-authored an article on anti-boycott legislation that was discussed and quoted at length on a “The Volokh Conspiracy,” a law blog.

Assistant Professor Romi Kher (Narendra Paul Loomba Department of Management) was interviewed for the History Channel’s new series, “The Machines that Built America.”

Undergraduates Alison Lee (BBA, ’22) and Richard Reyes (BBA, ’22) have been elected president and executive vice president, respectively, of Baruch’s Undergraduate Student Government.

Undergraduates Mei Shun Lee (BBA, ’21) and Yunqin Lin have each won a $10,000 scholarship from the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB).

Professor Trevor Moores (Paul H. Chook Department of Information Systems and Statistics) won an Outstanding Academic Advisor Award from the New York Metropolitan Chapter of ISACA, which also gave awards to the Baruch Cybersecurity Student Club for Outstanding ISACA Student Group and Student Group Trailblazer, and to club president Samad Sunny (BBA, ’21) for Outstanding Student Contributor.

Professor Lilac Nachum (Allen G. Aaronson Department of Marketing and International Business) received the 2021 AIB/FIU Best Theory Paper Award for her paper, “Value Distribution in Global Value Chains: Interdependence Relationships, Markets for Social Justice and Government Policy,” forthcoming in the Journal of International Business Policy.

Distinguished Lecturer Gideon Pell (Paul H. Chook Department of Information Systems and Statistics) wrote about the risks of cryptocurrency for Forbes.

Lindsey Plewa, Deputy Director of the Graduate Career Management Center, received her Doctorate in Education from Northeastern University.

Undergraduate Rom Raviv (BBA, ’22) was profiled in the Bangkok Post as a “podcasting mastermind.”

Assistant Professor Shuting Wang (Paul H. Chook Department of Information Systems and Statistics) has won a Eugene M. Lang Junior Faculty Fellowship. She was interviewed about her research by Zicklin News.

Professor Allan Wernick (Department of Law) was quoted in a Forbes article by his colleague, Professor Marc Edelman, about college athletes on student visas. He also wrote an article for the Daily News about applying for U.S. citizenship.

Alumnus Justin Zhu (BBA ’11, MS ’12) has been appointed vice president of finance at Bit Digital, Inc.
