Zicklin School of Business Welcomes Baruch College’s New Provost

Dr. Linda Essig, MFA, PhD, is the new Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs at Baruch College. Her appointment comes as especially welcome news to the Zicklin School of Business, for not only does Dr. Essig have three decades’ experience in public higher education, but her scholarship and teaching experience have been heavily focused on entrepreneurship and innovation.

For the second year in a row, a team of Zicklin graduate students has won the Pitney Bowes Data Challenge, a two-week-long competition among students from across Baruch College and the Zicklin School. The number of students entering the competition more than doubled from last year.

July 13 Webinar: How the Covid-19 Pandemic Has Changed Healthcare Delivery

The Covid-19 pandemic has changed how we live, shop, study, work — and how we experience healthcare. We have witnessed a dramatic expansion of virtual healthcare, additionally spurred by advances in science and technology. Larry Zicklin (BBA, ‘​57) discusses how the pandemic is changing healthcare with Dr. Kenneth A. Berkowitz, MD, FCCP, Special Advisor, Veterans Health Administration National Center for Ethics in Health Care and Associate Professor of Medicine and Popular Health, NYU Grossman School of Medicine, who will share insights from his frontline experience in the pandemic and from his ethics perspective, and with Zicklin School Prof. Alex Mills, whose research interests include how the healthcare system responds to disruptions.

Alumnus  Marc Berman  (BBA, ’67) has been  appointed  to the advisory board of Options Solutions LLC.

Professor  Douglas R. Carmichael , Eli and Claire Mason Professor in Accountancy, was quoted in an  article  in  Crain’s New York Business  on the struggling fashion house Sequential Brands.

Alumna  Ramona Cedeno  (BBA, ’01) was  named  to the 2021-2022 Board of Directors of the New York State CPA Society.

Alumnus  Rory Christian  (MBA, ’08) has been  named  a Commissioner of the New York State Public Service Commission.

Professor  Marc Edelman  (Department of Law)  predicted  the National College Athletic Association’s loss of its recent U.S. Supreme Court case and  outlined  what will happen next. He was also interviewed on the subject by  AnnArbor ,  The Advocate , and  Southern California Public Radio .

Undergraduate  Bricen Fisher  (BBA, ’24) has  won  a Jeannette K. Watson Fellowship.

Alumnus  Alan D. Gaines  (BBA, ’76) has been  appointed  to the board of directors of Vision Marine Technologies.

Assistant Professor  Tanuka Ghoshal  (Allen G. Aaronson Department of Marketing and International Business) has won a Eugene Lang Junior Faculty Fellowship. She sat down for a  Q&A  with Zicklin News.

Zicklin undergraduates  Tasnia Hussain  (BBA, ’22) and  Nayancie Matthews  (BBA, ’22)  won  this year’s Up to Us Campus Competition, a nationwide contest to raise awareness of the impact of U.S. fiscal and economic policy issues.

Alumna  Katelyn Kogan  (MS, ’14) was  named  to the 2021-2022 Board of Directors of the New York State CPA Society.

Alumnus  Ruben D. Marte’  (BBA, ’86), a captain in the Indiana state police, was  recognized  for 30 years of service.

Alumna  Sharon McLennon  (MBA, ’91) is  now  the owner of Coldwell Bank Splendor Realty,   the first 100-percent, African American, woman-owned Coldwell Banker franchise in South Florida.

Professor  Scott Newbert ,  Academic Director of the Lawrence N. Field Programs in Entrepreneurship,  was a member of the  2021 CNBC Disruptor 50  Advisory Council , a group of thought ​leaders in entrepreneurship and innovation who helped CNBC compile the Disruptor 50, its  annual list  of private companies transforming the economy and challenging established companies. He also  published  an article in  Entrepreneur .

Alumnus  Chris Panagiotakos  (BBA, ’96) has been  appointed  Chief Financial Officer of Data Storage Corporation.

Distinguished Professor  Robert Schwartz   (Bert W. Wasserman Department of Economics and Finance) and alumna  Deniz Ozenbas  (MBA ’00, PhD ’02)  co- published  the open-access textbook  Liquidity, Markets and Trading in Action  (Springer, 2021).

Alumnus  Amit Sharma  (MBA, ’06) has  joined  Hostess Brands as Vice President, Investor Relations.

Professor  Abdullah Tansel  (Paul H. Chook Department of Information Systems and Statistics) was  interviewed  about decentralized finance, or DeFi.

Alumna  Chelsea Wepy  (BBA, ’21) has  won  a Venture For America Fellowship.
