June 10 Webinar: The Role of Index Funds in Corporate Governance

Are index funds truly passive investors, or could they be power players in disguise? Index funds are designed to mirror the market, investing in proportion to a benchmark index. But as their assets grow, their proxy votes also increase. Though bound by fiduciary duty to their shareholders, index fund managers have the potential to play important roles in debates over executive pay, ESG policies, and board elections. Larry Zicklin (BBA, ’57) discusses these dynamics with Associate Professors Sonali Hazarika and Leonard Kostovetsky, both of the Bert W. Wasserman Department of Economics and Finance. With an introduction by Dean Bruce Weber and Q&A moderated by Associate Dean Gwendolyn Webb.
